For Immediate Release: 7/14/2023 7:13 pm
On July 14th 2023 at about 12:11 PM, Worcester Police officers were dispatched to the area of Cutler St for a report of a male threatening people with a handgun. Upon arrival, the first responding officers observed a male running on Dorchester St while holding a handgun. Officers attempted to catch up with the male, and ordered him to get on the ground and drop the gun. Eventually, the male sat behind a parked vehicle on Cutler St, while continuing to ignore commands to drop the gun.
Officers started setting up a perimeter and attempted to de-escalate the situation by speaking with the male. At one point, the male pointed the firearm in the direction of the officers, but did not fire. He also placed the handgun on the ground once, but refused to move away from it, and picked it up again. The male entered the porch of a nearby residence, to which he had a connection, and refused to leave.
The Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT Team, and mental health clinicians were all dispatched to the scene. Officers evacuated other residents of the building, and Crisis Negotiators made contact with the male. After a lengthy negotiation, at about 2:17 PM, the male left the gun on the porch, walked out and was taken into custody without incident.
Due to the initial domestic nature of the call, the male will not be identified. The initial investigation determined that the male had threatened multiple people with the firearm before entering the building. The handgun was recovered by officers.
He is charged with three counts of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Firearm), Kidnapping while Armed with a Firearm, Intimidation of a Witness, Carrying a Loaded Firearm without a License, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession of a Firearm without an FID Card, Possession of Ammunition without an FID Card, Threatening to Commit a Crime, and Carrying a Dangerous Weapon.
