Worcester, MA (April 27, 2016) - The City of Worcester Human Rights Commission, in partnership with Community Legal Aid, the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office and the Bridge of Central Massachusetts, is launching a series of trainings for local shelter providers. This initiative is a continuation of the City's efforts to ensure that all residents have equal access to shelter facilities and other services for the homeless.
In September 2014, the Worcester City Council passed an ordinance amending the mission of the Human Rights Commission to include protection against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression. Last year, the Human Rights Commission conducted a survey of local shelters and temporary housing programs to better understand the experiences and needs of both shelter residents and staff. The City is pleased to announce that a report and comprehensive resource guide are now available for the public, and can be found on the City's website.
In the next months, the City and its partners will be visiting local shelters to provide targeted training and support regarding the 2014 ordinance and state law protections.
"We are committed to ensuring that the rights of all vulnerable Worcester residents are protected, and to providing the necessary support to our community housing providers to create welcoming and safe spaces," said Jayna Turchek, the City's Director of Human Rights and Disabilities.
