Worcester, MA (April 28, 2016) - The City of Worcester and Worcester Tree Initiative, in partnership with National Grid and The Sierra Club of Massachusetts, will celebrate Arbor Day and the City's 30th year participating in the Tree City USA program with a tree planting event in the City's Crow Hill Conservation Area.
The celebration will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Friday, April 29th, across the street from the EcoTarium, 222 Harrington Way, Worcester. City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr., State Representative James J. O'Day, State Representative Mary S. Keefe and other dignitaries will reflect on the importance of trees to a city's character, and 15 trees will be planted at Crow Hill and the EcoTarium.
Tree Cities are cities that show exemplary commitment to their urban forest and must reapply to The Arbor Day Foundation every year for this designation. The Tree City USA program has existed for 40 years. Worcester was one of the first cities to be accepted into the program. Very few communities in the country have more years in the Tree City USA program, giving Worcester a distinguished place among these high achieving cities and towns.
In addition to the City's participation in the Tree City USA program, the Arbor Day Foundation also annually presents the Growth Award to cities going above and beyond the requirements to be a Tree City and demonstrating innovative urban forestry projects. Worcester has received this award every year for the past 17 years.
