On March 24th 2023 at about 5:30 PM, Worcester Police officers were dispatched to an address on Everard St for a report of a break in progress. Officers were given a detailed description of the suspect, who was seen forcing his way through a door with a crowbar. The first officer on scene observed a male, later identified as Devondre Cooper, forty-three-years-old of Dorchester St, who matched the description given by dispatch and was holding a crowbar. The officer told Mr. Cooper to speak with him, and Mr. Cooper ran away through backyards.
After a brief foot pursuit, Mr. Cooper was taken into custody. Officers located a backpack which had been dropped by Mr. Cooper. The backpack contained a sledgehammer and a handgun. Officers verified that Mr. Cooper had damaged the lock and door frame of the rear of the address. Mr. Cooper does not have a license to carry and is charged with Breaking and Entering during the Daytime with Intent to Commit a Felony, Possession of Burglarious Instruments, Vandalism, Possession of a Firearm without a License, Possession of Ammunition without an FID, and Possession of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony.
