Worcester, MA (December 24, 2012) - The City of Worcester and First Night Worcester will say goodbye to 2012 and welcome in 2013 with a full range of activities and entertainment including a parade honoring First Night Worcester's Grand Marshall Lt. Governor Tim Murray, figure skating performances, bands, fireworks and laser light shows. New this year, a heated musical tent on City Hall Plaza and skating on the Worcester Common Oval.
The fun starts at 3:00 PM with a professional skating show provided by Colonial Figure Skating Club. Colorful costumes, clever sets, and popular music make this an event that shouldn't be missed! Colonial will also perform a second show on New Year's Day at 1:00 PM. Immediately following both shows the Worcester Common Oval will be open for public skating. First Night Worcester buttons holders will receive free admission on New Year's Eve. Regular admission is $2 dollars. Public skating on the Oval will be free on New Year's Day courtesy of The Hanover Insurance Group. Skate rentals are available for $3, but skaters are encouraged to bring their own.
Included in the line up of skaters are Elin Shran, who toured with the "Ice Capades" for many years; Andrew Miller Korda, former Junior U.S. National Ice Dance Champion: Ryan Van Doren, 2013 New England Juvenile Mens Champion, 2013 Eastern Sectional Juvenile Mens Champion and US National Competitor; Brad Vigorito, 2013 New England Regional Senior Men's silver medalist; and Marissa Gottlieb, 2012 New England Novice Ladies silver medalist. Also performing in the show are Holden residents Katie Beriau and Sarah Farley. Katie Beriau is a U.S. National and International Competitor. Sarah Farley is a National Competitor and currently working for the Worcester Sharks. In addition to the skaters, 16 year old Theodora Nestrova, an award winning musical theater entertainer, will add her talents to the show with a special performance.
The music tent on City Hall Plaza will open at 3:00 PM with a full line up of live bands until midnight beginning with Thea Hopkins, followed by the Bees Knees, Groupo Fantasia, Li'l BeeDee and the Doo-Rites and The Numbskulls. There will be free hotdogs while supplies last between 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM provided by Creedon Co. As a special addition to First Night Worcester, star of stage and screen, Alicia Witt, will return to her hometown with a 10:00 PM musical performance at Mechanics Hall.
At 7:00 PM Lt. Governor Timothy P. Murray will serve as the first ever Grand Marshal of the New Year's Eve Procession down the newly re-opened Front and Mercantile Streets. Stop by the tent between 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM and make something colorful and fun to carry in the parade.
First Night Worcester revelers can also enjoy two laser light shows-one at the Worcester Art Museum at 6:30 PM and another at 11:45 PM outside the City Hall Plaza tent. The evening will also feature the triumphant return of fireworks at 7:30 PM and midnight. The fireworks displays are provided by Polar Beverages.
