WORCESTER, Mass. – The United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced an award of $200,000 from the Safe Streets and Roads for All program (SS4A) to the City of Worcester to develop a Safety Action Plan for the City’s transportation network.
This plan will follow the USDOT’s recently adopted Safe System approach and will establish and prioritize actions aimed at reducing serious injury and fatal crashes, with a Vision Zero goal of complete elimination of these most serious crash outcomes through changes in both user behavior and infrastructure.
“Creating safe streets for people of all ages and abilities is a top priority for Worcester,” said City Manager Eric D. Batista. “We are grateful for the support from the USDOT and look forward to ongoing partnerships as we implement changes to address the inequitable impacts of traffic safety in our community.”
Once completed, the City’s commitment to the Safety Action Plan will establish eligibility to apply for project implementation funding in future rounds of the SS4A program. $5 billion in funding to improve the safety of the nation’s streets has been appropriated to this program over the next five years.
Development of the Safety Action Plan and implementation of its recommendations is a key initiative of Worcester’s new Department of Transportation & Mobility.
