Worcester, MA (July 12, 2016) - An 8.6 acre parcel of land has been acquired by the Greater Worcester Land Trust, who has in turn granted a conservation restriction on the property to the City of Worcester's Conservation Commission. The agreement permanently protects the property from development, preserving it as open space and natural habitat.
This newest addition to the City's open space is located adjacent to Donker Farm on Tory Fort Lane, which was similarly acquired in 2015 for conservation purposes. The newly acquired land consists mostly of the upland hardwood forest with pockets of wetlands and potential vernal pools.
The property was purchased by the Greater Worcester Land Trust for $80,000, with assistance from a Conservation Partnership Grant awarded by the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. The City of Worcester acquired the conservation restriction at no cost on June 30, 2016.
In total, the City has preserved some 720 acres of open space city-wide in addition to 1,471 acres set aside for parks and recreation facilities.
Greater Worcester Land Trust will host a walk of Worcester's newest open space at 5:30 PM on Thursday, July 14th, meeting on Tory Fort Lane. For updates, please check https://www.facebook.com/theGWLT or call (508) 795-3838.
