Worcester, MA (July 12, 2016) - The City will host a rededication ceremony for the newly-restored Civil War memorial, the Soldiers' Monument, this weekend.
WHAT: Soldiers' Monument rededication ceremony
WHERE: Northeast Corner of the Worcester Common, Near Front and Church Streets
WHEN: 12:00 PM, Saturday, July 16th
The day will begin with a procession to the Common, starting at Mechanics Hall on Main Street at 11:30 AM.
The Soldiers' Monument was originally dedicated on July 15, 1874. The names of 398 Worcester soldiers killed in the Civil War are inscribed on bronze plaques, now restored, on the sides of the memorial.
The cost of the $193,000 restoration, performed by Aegis Restauro, LLC of New Jersey, was funded by the Gar Memorial Hall Trust Fund. Work included: cleaning of all bronze, cleaning of all stone, repointing of mortar on granite, removal of the top statute for cleaning and repair, replacement of broken granite below the statute and reinstallation of the statute on the monument.
