WORCESTER, Mass. – On Monday, an 8-inch diameter water main ruptured on Heard Street near Stafford Street at the railroad bridge.
The water main break severely undermined the roadway adjacent to the southeast bridge abutment and deposited material on the adjacent railroad tracks. Heard Street remains closed to all traffic between Stafford Street and Genesee Street.
Vehicular traffic continues to be detoured while pedestrian access is permitted on one side. No customers are currently without water. The bridge over the railroad was inspected and inspectors determined it was not structurally compromised. CSX has resumed to normal rail operations.
DPW&P staff has been working with MassDOT bridge officials and a contractor to agree on the scope and method of repair of the roadway. Once approval has been received, the contractor will commence work. The water main will also be repaired during this effort. It is expected to take up to a week to complete the repairs and open the roadway to traffic once again.
