WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester, United Way of Central Massachusetts, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, and National Fitness Campaign (NFC) unveiled University Park’s Fitness Court® Monday, celebrating free fitness for all residents.
Designed to expand opportunities for high-quality workouts and create equitable access to exercise for communities, the Fitness Court lets people use their own body weight to get a complete workout using seven exercise stations.
“University Park’s new Fitness Court is an incredible – and accessible – opportunity for residents to get outside and engage in high-quality physical activity while building bonds with fellow community members,” said Worcester City Manager Eric D. Batista. “Thank you to United Way of Central Massachusetts, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, National Fitness Campaign, Health and Human Services Commissioner Dr. Castiel, as well as all of our sponsors, for prioritizing a healthy and strong Worcester community.”
The workouts are adaptable for all fitness and ability levels, allowing participants to move at their own pace. Users also may download the free Fitness Court App, which acts as a coach-in-your-pocket and enhances the outdoor gym into a digitally-supported wellness experience.
“This is an investment into neighborhood; an investment into health; an investment into Main South; an investment that will be utilized by teens and families, by college students, by seniors, and by those living in group homes in the area,” said United Way of Central Massachusetts President and CEO Tim Garvin. “We are proud to be involved in the beautiful and healthy effort.”
“Blue Cross is committed to helping people live healthy lives and eliminating the physical and social barriers that lead to health disparities,” said Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. “We’re proud to partner with NFC and the City of Worcester to launch a Fitness Court that will provide Worcester residents with a communal gathering space and access to premiere free outdoor fitness opportunities.”
Worcester’s Fitness Court is one of 15 Blue Cross Fitness Courts that are currently open or set to be constructed in public spaces this year.
“National Fitness Campaign is proud to welcome the City of Worcester to the campaign as a leader in Massachusetts, championing health and wellness for their residents” said Mitch Menaged, founder of NFC. “The addition of the Fitness Court, along with digital wellness programming, demonstrates a tremendous commitment to the health and wellbeing within the community.”
