For Immediate Release: 6/2/2021 9:46 am
The City of Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks has announced that Indian Lake will be treated with aluminum sulfate on Thursday, June 3. All individuals are advised to stay out of the water, refrain from using boats, and keep their pets out of the water on the day of the treatment. Signs will be posted on the beaches of Indian Lake prior to the treatment.
The water will be safe for swimming and other use on Friday, June 4.
Aluminum sulfate, also known as alum, is a safe and effective way to control the growth of harmful, toxin-producing algae by removing phosphorus from the water. The application of alum is a common practice to maintain a healthy lake and keeping it free of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, and associated toxins. This preventative treatment poses minimal risk to humans and animals after application is complete.
The application is coordinated with the Indian Lake Watershed Association and has been approved the Worcester Conservation Commission.
The following recommendations are being offered to avoid exposure on the day of treatment:
• Do not swim in the lake
• Do not allow pets in the water
• Fishing is prohibited
• Do not swallow water
• Rinse skin off immediately if contact occurs
