Worcester, MA (August 29, 2016) - A century-old Worcester institution will break ground next week on a new expansion, with local officials present to celebrate.
Barrows Hardware, which opened for business in Webster Square in 1914, will celebrate the start of a 6,300 square-foot expansion with a groundbreaking ceremony at 1:00 PM Tuesday, August 30th, at their store at 15 Webster St., Worcester.
Local officials including City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr., Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce President Timothy P. Murray and Mike Marchand, President of the Webster Square Business Association, will be among those on hand to celebrate.
The City of Worcester Executive Office of Economic Development is proud to have provided the technical support throughout the permitting process to help allow the business' third-generation owners expand their successful business in Worcester. The new expansion will allow the business to expand its current offerings, create a redesigned parking lot and add more services like propane dispensing. The new store will be a 15,000-square-foot destination for new and longtime customers.
"We love to celebrate new business in Worcester, but supporting our mainstay local businesses is just as important," said City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr. "I'm proud the City was able to support the Barrows family with their expansion and wish them continued success in Worcester."
Irving Barrows started Barrows Hardware in Webster Square in 1914. His son, Bob Barrows, moved the business in the 1960s to its current home on Webster Street, where it is now operated by his son, Brian Barrows.
"The Barrows family is fully committed to Worcester and to Webster Square," said Brian Barrows. "We believe in the future of our business and appreciate the generations of loyal customers we have served for more than 100 years."
