On October 19th 2023 at about 10:35 AM, a Worcester Police officer assigned to the downtown unit were on patrol in the area of Union Station when they observed an individual walking through a secure basement area of the station, which is not open to the public, dressed as a construction worker. The officer noticed that the male, identified as twenty-nine-year-old Nathaniel Gaye of Boston, was wearing a red hard hat, safety glasses and was carrying what appeared to be a Worcester Police bike. Mr. Gaye was walking away from the storage area that houses the Worcester Police bikes.
An officer began speaking with Mr. Gaye, who claimed to be part of a construction crew that was cleaning up Union Station. Mr. Gaye did have a good explanation as to why he was moving a Worcester Police bike. The officer called for assistance and saw that Mr. Gaye had several other items in a cart. Officers determined that Mr. Gaye did not have a legitimate reason for being in the restricted basement area or having a police bike and told him he was under arrest. Mr. Gaye pulled away from the officers and ran toward Harding St.
After a brief foot pursuit, one of the officers caught up to Mr. Gaye and placed him under arrest. A search of the shopping cart revealed an expensive security system that was scheduled to be installed in Union Station, and other items. Mr. Gaye had two active warrants for his address. He is additionally charged with Larceny from a Building, Larceny Over $1200, Resisting Arrest, Disorderly Conduct, Disturbing the Peace and Trespass.
