On August 1st, 2024, at approximately 7:46 PM, Worcester Police officers assigned to Summer Impact were assisting officers at a motor vehicle stop. While at the scene, a vehicle passed by with someone inside yelling an expletive at one of our officers. That vehicle had a heavily tinted license plate, so officers pulled the vehicle over on Quinsigamond Avenue.
Officers observed four males inside of the vehicle.
Twenty-one-year-old Shane Rivera-Borrero was one of two passengers in the backseat. Officers observed he was breathing heavily and noticed a backpack between his legs. Officers asked the men if there was a gun inside the vehicle. One of them told officers that there was one inside of the console.
The men were told to exit the vehicle and complied. Rivera-Borrero continued to breathe heavily as he exited the vehicle. Officers searched his backpack and discovered a firearm. Rivera-Borrero was placed in handcuffs. He told officers he did not have a license to carry, which officers confirmed.
The Crime Scene Unit took possession of the firearm and discovered it was a ghost gun with no serial number. Rivera-Borrero is charged with carrying a loaded firearm without a license, carrying a firearm without a license, storing a firearm improperly, and possession of ammunition without an FID card.
Officers also discovered a legal firearm inside of the console, which was registered to the operator of the vehicle. The operator was given a verbal warning about the tinted license plate cover. He and the other two men were free to leave.
