ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYST
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for Environmental Analyst positions in the Water Operations Division within the Department of Public Works and Parks. Under the direction of the Director of Environmental Systems, this entry-level position will primarily focus on water quality within the Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Unit and Water Operations. This position will include field work such as the collection of water samples for lab analysis, field testing for water quality, inspection of lands and facilities for potential sources of pollution and the inspection of homes and businesses relative to water use. Office related duties include reviewing water quality data, researching water related issues, entering water quality test results in a database and responding to customer inquiries.

ESSENTIAL TASKS:

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Assist in the preparation of regulatory reports required by federal and state environmental agencies.
  • Assist with collection, analysis, and data entry as it relates to water quality including collection from homes, businesses, and water system construction projects.
  • Assist in data entry and preparation of statistical reports used internally by DPW&P to track drinking water quality, water consumption and reservoir capacity.
  • Assist the Environmental Management Systems and Water Engineering staff with conducting research to support environmentally related programs of DPW&P.
  • Conduct research using the internet, professional contacts, library sources and other means of information gathering to be proactive with water-related issues and assist in making recommendations for environmental improvements to DPW&P programs.
  • Review water quality data.
  • Enter water quality test results into a database.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and complaints related to drinking water quality and water conservation. Follow up with residents to explain test results and recommend solutions to problems.
  • Inspect lands and facilities for potential sources of pollution
  • Inspect homes and businesses relative to water use

SECONDARY ELEMENTS:

  • Participate in DPW&P’s youth education program by assisting with material preparation and giving presentations to school children in a classroom setting or during field trips to DPW&P facilities
  • Assist in the preparation of informative brochures and fliers to educate the public on issues related to the work of DPW&P
  • Perform related work as required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of environmental issues
  • Skilled in public speaking
  • Strong record keeping skills
  • Creative thinking and willingness to offer suggestions for improvements to programs and operations
  • Ability to read and interpret regulations
  • Ability to review data, conduct analyses, and prepare reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other employees and the public
  • Ability to work outdoors under adverse weather conditions
  • Knowledge of various water collection techniques, including sampling, testing, and monitoring for water quality
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite with particular emphasis on Word and Excel
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a team environment
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relations with the public

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Engineering, or an Environmental discipline, or other science-related discipline
  • Proficient with computers and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent written and verbal communication

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of experience collecting, analyzing, and entering data
  • One (1) year of experience preparing regulatory reports that are required by federal and state environmental agencies
  • One (1) year of experience conducting research to support environmentally related programs
  • One (1) year of experience collecting water samples from homes, businesses, or water system construction projects for lab analysis
  • One (1) year of experience inspecting lands or facilities for potential sources of pollution

SALARY RANGE: $25.77 - $33.40 per hour, full-time, with an excellent benefits package
