ASSISTANT STOREKEEPER
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS & PARKS
CITY OF WORCESTER

The City of Worcester seeks qualified applicants for Assistant Storekeeper positions for the Water Operations Division of the Department of Public Works & Parks (DPW&P). Under the general direction of the General Foreman, the Assistant Storekeeper will perform both manual and clerical duties in office and supply operations. This position entails working with purchase requisitions, purchase orders, and purchasing contracts, as well as receiving, storing, distributing, inventorying and controlling all appropriate water supplies and materials.

This position works on a shift rotation schedule and will regularly be scheduled to work night shifts. The successful applicant must be able to work any eight (8) hours per day, any five (5) days per week, and any forty (40) hours per week; be able to work on weekends on a consistent basis (day and night shifts); be able and available to work overtime as necessary (required, as-needed).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Prepare and maintain records, files, daily activity reports, work orders, charge memos and service returns.
  • Answer telephone and respond to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Communicate via radio with field crews to provide job-related information.
  • Enter, edit and update data in computerized work order system.
  • Complete inventory counts on stock items in the water operations division.
  • Manage the receipt, storage and distribution of water supplies and materials.
  • Ensure all supplies match purchase orders and keep a record of all items.
  • Perform manual and clerical duties in the office.
  • Occasionally pick up parts or supplies from a vendor or supplier and bring to a job site.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Computer proficiency, including the ability to use Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent written and verbal skills
  • Ability to make arithmetical computations with considerable accuracy
  • Ability to maintain professionalism with challenging customers
  • Knowledge of data input and the use and maintenance of databases
  • Knowledge of record keeping practices including inventory management
  • Ability to keep accurate stock records and make reports when requested
  • Strength and ability to facilitate the handling of bulky and heavy stock items
  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience with basic arithmetic calculations
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • Computer proficiency including with Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior professional experience in purchasing, stockrooms, and/or inventory control
  • Prior experience in a public works, water supply, utility or construction setting
  • Knowledge of methods and practices pertaining to inventory control

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation

SALARY RANGE: $21.82 - $26.28 hourly, full-time, excellent benefits package.
