For Immediate Release: 8/5/2019 4:14 pm
At approximately 2:45 p.m. today, a water main break occurred on Lamartine Street at Hermon Street. The break in the 12- inch diameter main that was installed in 1911 has been isolated and is being repaired.
Motorists are advised to avoid this area to help ease traffic congestion and allow the repair crew to work safely and quickly.
The break has caused widespread rusty water to customers and you are advised to check your cold water taps for discoloration from rust. The areas affected include the Green Island neighborhood, Elm Park neighborhood, Downtown, neighborhoods along Chandler Street, Shrewsbury Street, UMass University campus, and Lake Avenue area. If you do experience rusty water, delay washing laundry and do not use your hot water tap until the cold water runs clear. The water remains safe to use.
The City of Worcester repairs breaks as quickly as possible and remains mindful of water conservation efforts.
