WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester Department of Sustainability and Resilience (DSR) will celebrate the commencement of stream dosing at the newly constructed Alum Dosing Station at Indian Lake with a ribbon cutting event on Friday, June 16.
The Alum Dosing Station will be a major step in the management of stormwater pollution at Indian Lake, with the intention of reducing lake closures and increasing lake water clarity.
Indian Lake is an important recreational resource for the City, but as a shallow, urban lake, it suffers from low water clarity and cyanobacteria blooms. The DSR Lakes and Ponds Program has designed and constructed the Alum Dosing Station to mitigate the causes of cyanobacteria blooms by treating Ararat Brook for stormwater contaminants during rain events.
The construction of the Alum Dosing Station at Ararat Brook has been a collaborative effort between the Worcester Department of Public Works & Parks, DSR, and the Indian Lake Watershed Association. The project would not have been possible without the donations of land from the Bancroft School and the Universalist Church. The City looks forward to continued collaborations with the community as it begins this new chapter in the management of Indian Lake.
Friday’s event will include food and station tours, a water quality monitoring demonstration, a screening of the final installment of the Indian Lake Blue Space Minute, and a speaking program. Parking is available at the Universalist Church on Shore Drive.
