WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester Department of Sustainability and Resilience is inviting the public to participate in a series of Community Planting Days for Worcester’s first Miyawaki Forests.
Miyawaki Forests are small, dense, layered urban plantings that grow vigorously and help to cool “heat islands,” improve air quality and biodiversity, and foster climate resilience.
The first Miyawaki Forest is approximately 6,400 square-feet and will be planted in a section of the McGrath Parking Lot, next to the Worcester Public Library at 3 Salem Sq. and adjacent to McGrath Boulevard. The second Miyawaki Forest is 10,000 square-feet and will be planted in Plumley Village at 16 Laurel St. and will also include small pockets of community gathering spaces.
