Worcester, MA (August 29, 2012) - As of July 1, 2012, a statewide ban on the disposal of needles, syringes and lancets (referred to collectively as "sharps") in household trash has taken effect. Residents can no longer dispose of these items through the household trash. As an alternative, the Worcester Division of Public Health is providing BD Safe-Clip devices at no charge to Worcester residents. The BD Safe-Clip needle clipping and storage device safely retains up to 1,500 clipped needles. Residents can obtain the device at the Worcester Division of Public Health located at 25 Meade Street, Worcester, MA. In addition, Worcester residents can dispose of sharps at one of the Residential Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events that are held in the Spring and Fall. Please check the Department of Public Works website for dates or call (508) 929-1300 for additional information. Residents should also check with their health care provider for other proper disposal options for sharps.
