Worcester, MA (December 4, 2014) - The Standing Committee on Economic Development, City of Worcester will host a public hearing on the creation of a Salisbury Cultural District, Tuesday, December 9th, 5:30 PM in the Esther Howland Chamber, City Hall.
The Public Hearing concerns the recommendation of the City Manager for the creation of a Salisbury Cultural District generally encompassing the Highland Street corridor between Lincoln Square and West Street, Institute Road including the WPI campus, the Park Avenue corridor between Institute Road and Pratt Street, the Salisbury Street corridor between Lincoln Street and Regent Street, the Grove Street corridor between Highland Street and the WRTA garage and the Prescott Street corridor between Salisbury Street and North Street. A hard copy of the recommendation and accompanying map is available for public review at the City Clerk Office, Room 206, City Hall weekdays during regular business hours.
A cultural district is a specific geographical area in a city or town that has a concentration of cultural facilities, activities and assets. It is a walkable, compact area that is easily identifiable to visitors and residents and serves as a center of cultural, artistic and economic activity. The Cultural District Initiative, overseen by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, encourages Massachusetts communities to strengthen this sense of place, while stimulating economic activity, improving the experiences of visitors to our communities and creating a higher quality of life. There are no limitations as to the number of Cultural Districts in any given community.
