Worcester, MA (January 30, 2015) - After requests from the City of Worcester and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency has sent a number of pieces of large equipment to Worcester to help clear some of the large snow banks around the City.
MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz has so far committed the following state resources to Worcester:
The equipment will help Worcester with the third phase of cleanup - clearing out some of the large snow piles around the City. These piles make it difficult for drivers to see at intersections and can make pedestrian travel dangerous. The first equipment arrived around 7:00 AM Friday and the plan was to start work around the areas of Lincoln Square, Belmont Street and Burncoat Street.
Worcester City Manager Edward Augustus thanked Lt. Gov. Polito, who was instrumental in getting the City the added resources to help dig out from the single biggest snow storm in its recorded history. Polito visited Worcester on Wednesday to thank DPW workers and pledged to support the City's cleanup in any way possible.
"MEMA, Gov. Baker and Lt. Gov. Polito have really stepped up to help Worcester with vital resources, as we continue to dig out from the largest snow storm in the City's history," Augustus said. "I want to thank them, and all the crews still working to make the streets and sidewalks safe for our residents."
The City Manager also thanked Rep. James McGovern for his key support of Worcester's request.
"This is a great example of local, state and federal partners working together to get the job done for the residents of Worcester," Augustus said.
