The City of Worcester’s Complete Streets Policy, endorsed by the City Council in December 2017, has gained approval from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The policy, which addresses the planning, design and maintenance of transportation infrastructure with a focus on improving safety and accessibility for all, was reviewed by MassDOT and received a score of 97 points out of a possible 100.
With MassDOT’s approval, the City advances to Tier II status, which focuses on identification and prioritization of Complete Streets projects. As part of citywide master planning efforts launching in 2018, the City will develop a Long-Range Transportation Plan that incorporates a five-year Complete Streets Prioritization Plan. Once the Prioritization Plan is approved by MassDOT, the City will be eligible to compete for state funding to implement complete streets projects.
