For Immediate Release: 10/4/2019 9:04 am
Sometime in the overnight between Thursday, October 3, and Friday, October 4, there was a break on the 24" high service water main on the southbound ramp from I-190 (Ararat St. interchange). The break is 100 plus feet north of Shore Drive. MassDOT is responsible for this section of roadway. The break was shut off and isolated between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.
As of this morning, the City is focusing on getting the high service distribution system back to normal operating conditions. The system is slowly recharging itself as repairs are made. There are no customers connected to the section of the water main that was shut off, however this break will cause widespread rusty water and low pressure.
A National Grid transformer on West Boylston Drive caught fire as a result of the flooding in the intersection. Police, Fire and National Grid are on site. In addition, the I-190 off ramp at the Hockanum Way and Indian Hill Road intersection is closed to traffic at this time.
