WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester announced Monday that the Frances Perkins Branch will be closed to the public as of March 24 for radon testing.
The municipality detected actionable levels of radon in the building’s basement and closed the branch until further notice out of an abundance of caution. On Friday, March 28, Atlas Environmental will conduct further testing that will last through the weekend. Based on the official results, which may take three to five days, a mitigation plan will be initiated if necessary.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings from the ground through cracks and gaps in and around walls, floods, and pipes. Radon is a colorless and odorless gas, and testing is the only way to know your level of exposure.
