WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester Department of Public Works and Parks (DPW&P) will perform construction-related activities in the Ernest A. Johnson Tunnel through September 2023. This project will involve removal of tiles from the ceiling and walls within the tunnel, as well as a comprehensive structural analysis of the tunnel itself.
The tunnel will be closed to the public and traffic starting Wednesday, May 17, 2023. The tunnel will be closed for approximately 4 months (16 weeks). It is anticipated that the tunnel will re-open to the public in September 2023.
DPW&P will implement all necessary steps and precautions to minimize any inconvenience that may arise during construction. Please note that during regular work hours from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. various construction vehicles and equipment will be present in and around the tunnel entrances.
