The City of Worcester’s Department of Public Works & Parks is working to fix a water main break on Shrewsbury Street between Hill and Mulberry streets.
The break occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The exact nature of the break has yet to be determined.
To facilitate repairs, the water main on Shrewsbury Street has been shut down from Washington Square to the end of East Worcester Street at Shrewsbury Street.
The break has forced the closure of westbound lanes from Hill to Mulberry streets, and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
As a result of the break, area residents may experience no water, rusty water or low water pressure during this time. Rusty water could be widespread, affecting much of the downtown area, Main South, Green Island and Lave Ave., in addition to Shrewsbury Street.
Customers nearest the break will have no water until the repair is completed. This includes the Mount Carmel Apartments, Leo Turo Way and businesses in the 56-72 Shrewsbury St. block.
Customers are advised to check their cold water taps for discoloration from rust. If you do experience rusty water, delay washing laundry and do not use your hot water taps until the cold water runs clear. The water remains safe to use.
The City of Worcester repairs breaks as quickly as possible, and expects repairs to this break to take much of the day to complete.
