Worcester, MA (September 28, 2012) - With Flu Season upon us, the Worcester Division of Public Health has announced today that this year’s Community Immunity Campaign will kick off with Community Immunity Day, Saturday, October 13th from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Worcester Senior Center. The flu clinic is free and open to the public.
An annual flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu and the flu-related complications that lead to hospitalization and even death. Health experts across the country recommend everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine. Since flu viruses are constantly changing and immunity can decline overtime, annual vaccination is needed for optimal protection, even during years when the viruses the vaccine protects against remain the same as the previous season.
"Many people think that because they received the flu vaccine last season, they do not need another one this year," stated Dr. Michael Hirsh, Commissioner, Worcester Division of Public Health. "Everyone needs to get vaccinated with this season's vaccine because immunity from last season's will have declined. The flu can prove to be a very serious illness for many and we are encouraging Worcester residents to take advantage of this free clinic scheduled for October 13th."
Individuals with children over the age of 6 months are strongly encouraged to have their child vaccinated, in addition to adults over the age of 65 and residents with medical conditions which may be complicated by the flu.
Complications of the flu can include bacterial pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration and worsening of chronic medical conditions, such as congestive heart failure, asthma or diabetes.
