Cold Weather Advisory Safety Tips

For Immediate Release: 12/26/2017 4:28 pm

Worcester, MA (December 26, 2017) - Extremely cold temperatures are predicted for the next several days with wind chill values falling below zero at times. Be prepared by following these cold weather safety tips during the school vacation week and throughout the winter season:

  • Dress in layers and stay dry.
  • Avoid outdoor exposure for extended periods and cover exposed skin.
  • Watch for frostbite which can develop in under a minute in extreme cold.
  • Keep pets indoors and check paws for signs of injury/damage.
  • Stay hydrated, fuel your body and take breaks during winter activities.
  • Protect pipes and shovel around vents to prevent carbon monoxide build-up.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for heating your house.
  • Check on neighbors and elders often.
  • Keep an emergency supply kit in your car.

The Hotel Grace, an emergency shelter located in the basement of St. John's Church at 44 Temple Street, will be open this week from Tuesday through Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.

"It's an important reminder for our community to be aware of the extreme cold and how to prepare for it," said City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. "Safety is always our top priority, especially in the winter when temperatures can drop to dangerous levels."

More winter weather safety/preparation tips are available from Worcester's Department of Emergency Communications. Residents are also encouraged to sign-up for ALERTWorcester and Smart911 to stay informed and be prepared in case of an emergency.
