WORCESTER – City officials will gather with community members and leaders to turn on the new Green Street underpass lighting installation this Friday evening.
The installation, one of three planned for the Canal District, is intended to improve walkability, create safe environments, and bring vibrancy to the area.
Encouraging this pedestrian corridor between downtown and the Canal District will generate more foot traffic for small businesses in the area and create recreational opportunities at nearby green spaces.
The Green Street Bridge project includes 48 color changing LED light fixtures that will be set to illuminate the underpass with different combinations and motions throughout the year. Different themes can be programmed for holidays, commemorations, and remembrances.
The system, made possible by a $250,000 Shared Streets and Spaces Grant from the state Department of transportation, is comprised of highly efficient lights, each at 34 watts, that are estimated to last more than 100,000 hours.
Similar lighting installations are designed and awaiting funding at underpasses on Franklin and Madison streets.
