City Announces Updated Swimming Area Plans

For Immediate Release: 7/1/2022 2:07 pm

WORCESTER – The City of Worcester and the Department of Public Works & Parks announce that due to staffing limitations Indian Lake Beach will not open today with the City’s other swimming areas and splash parks.

In addition, maintenance work will push back opening day for Greenwood Spray Park to this weekend.

All other spray parks, beaches, and the City pool opened today at noon, and will be open daily from 12 to 7 p.m.

City officials said maintaining the safety of beachgoers was the top priority when deciding to not open Indian Lake Beach. Because of national labor trends, many communities, including Worcester, have been unable to hire the number of lifeguards necessary to adequately staff existing swimming facilities.

“We will continue to recruit lifeguard candidates throughout the summer,” said Robert C. Antonelli Jr., assistant commissioner for DPW & Parks.

Prior to the pandemic, Worcester would usually hire around 40 lifeguards each summer. Last year, the City had about 20 lifeguards and operated a modified schedule at swimming areas. This summer, Worcester has hired 17 lifeguards so far.

“Maintaining the right number of lifeguards to keep everyone at our open swimming areas safe is our number one priority,” said Antonelli.

The City has worked to incentivize lifeguard applicants by offering free trainings and higher pay.

“It’s an important job,” said Antonelli. “Lifeguards help ensure the City’s youth have a safe and fun summer.”

The City’s spray parks will be open through Labor Day.

The Crompton Park Pool and all city beaches – Bell Pond, John J. Binienda Memorial Beach at Coes Pond, and Shore Park – will be open through Aug. 21.

The public is reminded that swimming at any facility that is not staffed by lifeguards is not recommended.
