Worcester, MA (April 3, 2015) - April is National Poetry Month - how are you celebrating this year? There is no better way to recognize the importance of poetry in our culture than to join amateur and professional poets and fellow citizens for a fun, family-friendly evening of poetry at the First Annual Worcester Poetry Pop Up, at Worcester City Hall on Wednesday, April 8th from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM.
The night will feature original and favorite poems alike recited by students from the Worcester Public Schools, members of the Worcester County Poetry Association and members of the Seven Hills Poetry Slam Collective.
The Poetry Pop Up will begin with City Manager Edward Augustus reading a poem of his choosing. Event attendees will then have an opportunity to deliver original and selected works during the Open Mic. Registration for the open mic begins at 6:00 PM. Burncoat Senior Duo will provide some musical entertainment. Finally, at 6:30 PM, the evening will culminate with the Public Reading when nine poets from various Worcester organizations will recite selected works, followed by the Open Mic presentations.
Anyone is encouraged to recite a poem during the event's Open Mic segment, so local poetry fans can delve into their favorite poetry collections or become inspired to write their own poems to share with fellow poetry enthusiasts. People interested in reading a poem should arrive early to sign up for a slot, which are three minutes maximum.
The Poetry Pop Up will take place in the Lincoln Levi Room on the third floor of Worcester City Hall. Light refreshments will be served. Parking is available at the Worcester Public Library and nearby lots.
The event is free and open to the press.
The First Annual Worcester Poetry Pop Up is sponsored by the City of Worcester and the Worcester Cultural Coalition in partnership with Worcester Public Schools, Worcester Public Library, Worcester County Poetry Association and the Seven Hills Poetry Slam Collective.
