For Immediate Release: 1/13/2015 10:14 am
Worcester, MA (January 13, 2015) - On Friday, January 16th from 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, the Worcester Common Oval will be host to "Beat the Press 2015," a City Hall vs. The Media grudge match, played out in the traditional style: a game of Broomball. For the uninitiated, Broomball is a little like hockey, except it's played in sneakers instead of ice skates; a broom instead of a hockey stick; and a ball instead of a puck. More information can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broomball.
The event will help highlight the Oval's new Friday night public skate, which will start at 5:00 PM after the game.
The media team will feature a veritable murderer's row of stars from Worcester's esteemed local outlets, including the Telegram & Gazette, Worcester Magazine, Worcester News Tonight, MassLive, Worcester Business Journal, Cumulus Media and WCRN. Mayor Joseph M. Petty and City Manager Edward M. Augustus, Jr., will headline the City Hall team, which will feature and a host of City Councilors and City department heads. Spectators are welcome free of charge for an event that will surely live on in Worcester infamy history.
About the Oval
The rink is open for public skating:
The 12,000-square-foot rink, which opened in 2012, is 4,000 square feet larger than the rink at New York City's Rockefeller Center. The Oval has piped-in music, skate rentals, concessions, holiday lights and more, making it a fun and affordable family-friendly activity.
The Oval is possible through the generous support of Hanover Insurance Company, MCPHS University, College of the Holy Cross, Fallon Community Health Plan, Baystate Savings Bank, the Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts, Harvard Pilgrim Healthcare and Destination Worcester.
