WORCESTER, Mass. – The City of Worcester announced Monday the contracting of the YMCA of Central Massachusetts to recruit, train, and hire lifeguards for the 2024 summer.
The municipality has faced challenges in the past few years in recruiting and hiring the required number of lifeguards to open all aquatic facilities. In response, the Department of Public Works and Parks issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for Aquatic Facility Staffing of Public Pools and Beaches. The RFP had four submissions and after evaluations were completed, DPW&P awarded a contract to the YMCA of Central Massachusetts. The City will still manage the staffing of the two (2) spray parks as well as trash removal, general cleanup, and water quality at all aquatic sites.
This comprehensive program operated by the YMCA of Central Massachusetts includes the staffing of lifeguards at four beaches including Bell Pond, Coes Pond Beach, Indian Lake Beach, and Shore Park as well as the Crompton Park pool. The YMCA will recruit, train, and staff the beaches and pool from the beginning of July until mid-August. The YMCA will use its access to indoor pool facilities and training programs to assist in staffing the program. Additionally, because the YMCA has year-round facilities, the trained lifeguards will be able to transfer into year-round positions at its facilities.
