For Immediate Release: 1/28/2022 11:58 am
WORCESTER – The City of Worcester has declared a snow emergency as of 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, ahead of a significant winter storm that is projected to bring as much as two feet of snow to the area on Saturday.
In addition, a travel ban is in effect as of 11 p.m. tonight and a declared winter parking ban goes into effect at midnight.
The Worcester Public Library, the Worcester Common Oval Public Ice Skating Rink, and the Residential Drop-Off Center will all be closed on Jan. 29.
The declared winter parking ban will go into effect at 12 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29. Municipal parking garages will be free of charge to any vehicle that enters after 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 28 until the declared winter parking ban is lifted. Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to move their cars from city streets, however standard rates will apply for any vehicle that enters a municipal garage before 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 28.
Towing and ticketing will be aggressively enforced to keep streets clear. Absolutely no parking will be permitted on emergency routes and where prohibited during a declared ban. For questions, please call the DPW Customer Service Center at (508) 929-1300.
The City also reminds residents that they have up to 10 hours from the end of a winter storm to clear the sidewalks abutting their property of any snow and ice. Residents who are able are also asked to clear snow around fire hydrants in their neighborhoods.
Also, due to the high winds, low visibility, and snow drifts expected, pedestrians and children should stay off the roadways on Jan. 29 for their own safety.
